Diwali 12 November
November 12, 2023 @ 2:14 pm - November 13, 2023 @ 2:26 pm IST
Diwali is a joyful festival celebrated in India. During this occasion, people decorate their homes with lighted diyas and lamps of various sizes. Due to concerns about air pollution, there are restrictions on the number of diyas that can be lit. People gather together and light diyas while offering prayers to the gods.
Why Diyas are lighted up on Diwali
Diyas symbolize happiness and spirituality, and are used to welcome the goddess Lakshmi. According to tradition, Lakshmi only visits homes that are lit up with diyas. To ensure a warm welcome for the goddess and to receive her blessings, people spread flowers and light diyas in front of their homes.
Worshipped Gods on Diwali
While there is no mandatory god to worship on Diwali, many people offer worship to Lakshmi and Vishnu by visiting their respective temples. Some celebrants also mark Lakshmi’s birthday on the same day. Temples are decorated with garlands made of red flowers, and idols of Krishna are adorned with white flowers. People also share gifts with the poor to spread happiness and goodwill.
For some religious people, Buddha is the last god to be worshipped on Diwali, after which the festival ends with prayers to Lakshmi and Vishnu.
