Kalashtami is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in honor of the avatar of Lord Shiva, known as Kaal Bhairava. This auspicious day is marked by the offering of Kala worship to seek the blessings of Kaal Bhairava. Devotees observe a fast to please him, and some even take a dip in the Ganges river to purify themselves before performing the Kala rituals. It is also believed to be the day of Kaal Bhairava’s birth, hence it is also called Bhairava Jayanthi.
Celebrations on Kalashtami
During the celebrations of Kalashtami, Shiva temples are adorned with beautiful decorations, and idols of Kaal Bhairava are draped in black cloth for the puja ceremony. Black dogs are also worshipped as they are considered to be the vehicles of Bhairava. Devotees observe a Vrat or fast to seek happiness and wealth. This day is considered auspicious to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva by offering puja to his idols after the puja of Kaal Bhairava idols.
Rituals performed on Kalashtami.
Several rituals are performed on Kalashtami. Devotees take a bath before visiting the temple and offering their prayers to seek the blessings of Kaal Bhairava. They also offer prayers to Lord Shiva for the well-being of their ancestors. After the Kaal Bhairava puja, devotees recite mantras to seek his blessings. Katha, a religious story or discourse, is also recited as a part of the ritual to praise Kaal Bhairava. In the end, gifts are offered to the Kaal Bhairava idols, and they are washed in the Ganges river.
Apart from the puja and rituals, black animals, especially dogs, are worshipped, and puja is performed to seek the blessings of Bhairava. After the puja, devotees also offer food products and new clothes to the poor as a part of the donation activity.
Kalashtami is an important festival for Hindus, and it is believed that seeking the blessings of Kaal Bhairava can bring success, happiness, and prosperity in one’s life.
