Mithunam Sankramam

Mithunam Sankramam is the important Sankranti day on which Sun God is worshipped. On this day, a welcome to the new Hindu month is offered, and Sun is honoured with the Sun prayers, Sun Puja and Sunfast. Dan Punya activities are also performed at this festival. People donate clothes to the poor and offer food to Barhamns for God’s blessings. In addition, Vishnu prayers are presented to Vishnu at this event.

This event shows the Sun’s transition from one Rashi to the other. Rashi, where Sun moves to enter the other, is called Vrushuba Rashi; the Rashi in which Sun enters is called Mithuna Rashi. This day also shows the coming of the new month of Hindus named Jyeshta. In 2022, it was celebrated on the 15th of July, and the day of celebration was Wednesday. In addition, it is also called Mithuna Sankranti.
Rituals related to Mithunam Sankramam
- Bath is taken by following bath roles on the morning of the event. A cup will be brought from home and filled with water from Ganga and Yamuna. Returning the sacred river water is necessary, so dip should be taken inside the river; otherwise, it harms the bath taker.
- As the Sun rises, prayers to the Surya are presented, and sweets are given to Sun as a gift, and after offering sweets to Surya, these will be distributed among Sun Puja performers. In the charity activity, new clothes, money, and food are given to deservers; this event celebrator gains prosperity as a reward of worship.
