Papmochani Ekadashi

Papmochani Ekadashi is one of the 24 Ekdashis celebrated by Hindus. It falls during Krishna Paksha and is considered significant for the removal of sins. Worshipping on this day is believed to cleanse the worshipper and their ancestors of all sins, which is why it is also known as “sin-removing day”.

The devotees of Papmochani Ekadashi take a holy bath in the Ganges at midnight and offer puja to the river for its blessings. Fasting is an essential part of the day, and the rules are strict – no food is allowed for ten hours. There are different forms of fasting, but one of the milder forms allows the consumption of fruits. In Vishnu and Shiva temples, prayers are offered, and Sandal paste and flowers are given as offerings.

The word “Papmochani” is derived from two words – “Pap” meaning sins and “Mochani” meaning removal. Therefore, Papmochani Ekadashi is believed to remove all sins of the worshipper and their ancestors.
