Pitru Paksha is a holy festival celebrated in Hinduism for more than 16 days, dedicated to all ancestors who have passed away and reached the realm of God. It begins on the full moon day, when people offer worship and special foods to their ancestors. The festival is widely celebrated in North India and is an occasion for paying respect to one’s forefathers.
Traditions related to the Pitrupaksha Begin.
The worship on Pitru Paksha is divided into three parts, with each part having its own traditions and customs.
The first part is called Pind Daan, where worship is dedicated to all ancestors of the worshipper. Pind is a special food prepared using desi ghee, rice, honey, and sugar. Rice balls are made using these ingredients, and then offered to the ancestors after they are left to cool for a few hours.
The second part of the worship is called Tarpan, where another special food is prepared using barley, kusha grass, and black sesame. This food is offered to the ancestors, and a small amount is also taken to the temple to show it to the Lord. Puja is offered to the Lord using this Tarpan, and then distributed among the devotees for their consumption.
The third and most important part of the worship is where all the food prepared in the first two parts is offered to the Brahmins. The worshipper receives the reward for making the food in the first two parts during this part of the worship. The festival is also an occasion to listen to stories of ancestors and learn from their experiences.
Reciting mantras while offering Puja leads to the worshipper’s success and a fulfilling life. Pitru Paksha is an important festival for Hindus, as it reinforces the belief in the existence of life after death and honors the legacy of one’s forefathers.
